chess tactics ebook for kindle fire

I am proud to announce that Tactics Time! 1001 Chess Tactics from the Games of Everyday Chess Players and the sequel Tactics Time 2: 1001 Real Chess Tactics From Real Chess Games are now available at for purchase!

The positive feedback from the books has been overwhelming.

Tactics Time has consistently been the #1 best seller in the Chess Books for Kindle section!

I heard from many customers and newsletter subscribers that they wanted to be able to solve chess tactics problems on their kindles and other mobile devices such as iPad and iPhones, and these eBooks will help fulfill this need.

People these days are busy, and constantly on the go.  No one has time to sit next to the fireplace with a good book anymore.

These books were designed to be read on mobile devices, and can be read in small bite sized chunks!

You can read Tactics Time whenever you have a spare moment – in line at the grocery store, while riding the subway to work, or on an exercise machine at the gym.

These eBooks contains hundreds of tactics from real class player games.

All of these problems are new and original.

You are going to love them!

I have a lot of “pet peeves” about most of the chess tactics books that are out on the market right now, and feel there is a lot of room for improvement in this area.

Some chess tactics books are filled with errors.  This is especially true for older chess books that were written before the days of computers.  So if you try to use one of these books, you also have to try and find an “errata” list that contains all of the corrections, and then hope that this list also doesn’t contain errors!

With our new ebooks all of the problems have been checked with the computer, and we each went through the problems and edited them to double check them, because sometimes the software actually does make mistakes.

I can also go back and make corrections to the book, which is something that can’t be done with a paperback book.

Most chess tactics books steal their problems from other chess books.  It is a lot easier to just steal existing problems than it is to come up with problems of your own.  Sometimes I will be solving a problem in a chess book and get a sense of de ja vu.  The reason is because I have already seen this problem before.  I think this is terrible, and our eBooks have nothing but new and original problems in them.

Another problem with many chess books is that they have way too many “cool” but rare and unrealistic problems.  They have way too many smothered mates, queen sacrifices, and under promotion problems.  While these are fun, and I love them as much as anybody, they are not really the best way to improve at chess.  It is good to know these patterns, and we do have some in our book, but you want to focus on getting good at the patterns that happen all the time.

That is why the focus is on the real tactics that happen in real games to real players.  These problems are exactly the types of positions that are happening to real players, like you and me.  These are not “composed problems” where everything works out perfectly, or Grandmaster games that are played almost perfectly.  These are the positions from the “rank and file”, who play for cheapos, traps and swindles.

Another problem is that many chess books are hard or annoying to read.  Authors will try and cram as many problems into a book as possible, which makes them hard to read.  Or they will use some bizarre font, and the board just looks odd.  Or you constantly have to flip back and forth from the front and back to see the answers, and try to remember what page you were on.

Since these are eBooks we do not have these size limitations, and there is only one problem per page, with the answer on the very next page.  This way you do not have to constantly flip to the back of the book to see the answer, or worry about accidentally seeing the answer before you have solved it.  The eReader software will remember where you left off, so you do not have to worry about losing your place while going through the problems.

We have got a lot of complements on the diagrams in this book, and the diagrams are given from the point of view of both White and Black, depending on whose turn it is to play.

The price is also incredibly reasonable.  We know that many chess players are on a tight budget, and the price of chess books has been skyrocketing.  We wanted the price to be so low that it is a “no brainer” to buy it.  For around the cost of a drink at starbucks you will get hundreds of problems that will develop your chess skills in a fun and painless manner, providing hours of entertainment and enjoyment.

Question: What if I don’t own a Kindle?

You don’t need a Kindle.   Neither Anthea or I owned a Kindle when we wrote the first tactics time book.

There is free Kindle reader software for just about every platform.   You can read more here:
You can read kindle books on Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, Blackberry, Android devices, even in a web browser, and just about anything.
The prices on the Kindle have come down in price significantly, so if you did want to buy one, they are pretty reasonably priced.
Q. Will there be a paper book version?
A.  Yes!
Although we originally planned for Tactics Time to be available only as a Kindle eBook, we realized that many people still want a traditional book.
So, I am proud to say that New in Chess will be publishing a paper back copy of the first Tactics Time book!  It comes out in December 2013!
Tactics Time paperback chess tactics book
Here is an e-mail I got from Joey from in New York who bought the book (reprinted here with his permission)….

I want to thank you for re-sparking my interest in chess.  I think trying to read and understand material that was written strictly by grandmasters makes the game frustrating.  Do you know how many countless chess books I’ve started just to put them down after reading a chapter or two finding out that the material was just too difficult to retain?  I’m enjoying your book because most of the material I understand and I like the challenging questions as well as the few mates in one’s that I sometimes miss because I’m over analyzing or sometimes just too tired.  Again, thank you not only for the book, but for being a nice person.  I’m glad I stumbled on to your material.

Thanks Joey!

So if you want to improve your chess game, go now and get the book, and raise your chess rating to a new high!

  1. I would love to buy your ebooks but there is one huge problem. Anything bought from Amazon has DRM and I will never, ever buy anything which uses that vile system. As puts it, DRM is “a threat to innovation in media, the privacy of readers, and freedom for computer users”.

Ideally I would like to have your books in epub format so that I can read them on my Sony eReader. I would happily pay a good price for that. As long as they were DRM-free, of course.

    Best wishes,

    • Hey thanks Chris for the email.

I am not a “DRM expert”, but as far as I understand – my book is not DRM. When I upload the book into kindle, it asks me if I want it to be DRM or not, and I always check “no”.

      See screenshot:

      DRM Tactics Time Amazon

The book is enrolled in the “KDP Select” program with amazon, with comes with pluses and minuses. The pluses are that people can “borrow” the book for free if they are an amazon prime member, and users can loan the book to each other, and we can do certain promotions like “countdown deals” and “free promos”, and things like this. The minus is that the ebook has to be exclusively on amazon in order to get these benefits. But it is not a huge price to pay, because amazon has such a large piece of the pie.

We also have a paperback version that came out in December that is reasonably priced, so you might like that :)

Thanks for the comment, and hope that helps.

  2. I think your newsletters and your Tactic Time books are great. Will you create a Tactics Time 3? I’m sure everyone who read the first 2 will love it. :)

  3. The link to the ChessReader in the TT Training Guide does not work:

404 – Datei oder Verzeichnis wurde nicht gefunden.
Die gesuchte Ressource wurde möglicherweise entfernt oder umbenannt, oder sie steht vorübergehend nicht zur Verfügung.

I have installed it from a Google search. Where can I get the database?

  4. The book time, good between 0 elo and 2000 elo. Good for core training or edge training.
If you discover this level. It could be prophyllaxis.
If the level is quite basic for you, this book is a good for speed and accuracy.

This is Good to Best improvment.
As a fan of chessbase software,,, blokh, vamos, and many other tactics books.
Tactic time is neccessary to me even if I’m a 1700 elo blitzer.
