Tactics Time 2 is here!

Today I would like to “officially” announce the Tactics Time 2 Kindle eBook!Tactics Time 2 Kindle Chess Tactics eBook on a kindle fireThis book is very similar to the original Tactics Time eBook, which has been a runaway best seller on amazon in the chess niche.

The book contains 1001 chess problems in it.

What makes the book unique is that all of the positions come from real games!

Most of the games are ones played between amateur chess players.

The reason for this is because the types of positions that you see in class player games are much different than the types of positions that you see from professional Grandmasters.

In amateur games:

  • Pieces are “loose” or “hanging”
  • Openings are unsound
  • Pawn structures are messed up
  • King safety is non existant
  • material is loop sided
  • etc

Bobby Fischer famously said

Tactics flow from a superior position.

This is very true at the Grandmaster level.  You have to get some kind of positional advantage before you can even dream of having a tactic.

However IT IS NOT TRUE AT ALL AT THE PATZER LEVEL!

Tactics “flow” from all kinds of crazy positions!

Often one side is totally losing, and his opponent makes a mistake, and BOOM a tactic pops up.

An example:

AragonDevonHere white clearly has a superior position.  The computer rates it as +19, meaning they are up 19 pawns.  They have a Queen for a Rook, and the Black King has no protection.  Here they could play 40. Qb5+ forking the Black King and Rook, winning a piece.

Instead White played 40. Qxh7?? grabbing a pawn, and Black played 40…g4#

So White had a one move tactic, and missed it, and Black had a one move tactic, and found it, so Black won the game.

BTW, White was rated 1520, and Black was rated 846.

So these are the types of silly things that happen in class player games all the time.  This was a G/90 USCF rated game as well, so wasn’t a 3 minute ICC blitz game or anything.

Apparently white even didn’t think it was checkmate when Black played g4.

So these are the types of tactics that we focus on in the book.  The real types of things that happen all the time.

Often they are not “pretty”, or “brilliant”, like the many chess puzzles that you will see elsewhere.  There are not a million queen sacrifices, or smothered mates, or under promotions.  Just real positions from real games.
